The Albukhary International University was founded by Syed Mokhtar Albukhary and is located within the Sharifah Rokiah Centre of Excellence. The Centre is named in honour of his mother and is spread over a 3.0.35-hectare (75-acre) site in Alor Setar, the birthplace of the founder.

The beauty of Albukhary International lies not just in its rich and beautiful architecture but also – and very importantly – in the diversity that can be seen in the countries of origin of its students and academic staff. The university places a high value on diversity.
