In 1998, Malaysia became home to Southeast Asia’s largest museum of Islamic art. Housing more than seven thousand artefacts, the Islamic Arts Museum has within a short period of time become one of the world's leading private Islamic museums. It has also become a popular tourist attraction in Kuala Lumpur, especially with foreigners.
Galleries
There are altogether 12 galleries, with collections that highlight the multi-ethnicity of the Muslim world that spans over 13 centuries and across more than 100 countries. Unlike other Islamic museums that concentrate on works from the heartlands of Persia and the Middle East, this museum gives special emphasis to Asia, with China, India and Southeast Asia well-represented.
Libraries
There is a specialist scholar's library with an exceptional collection of Islamic art books. The children's library is the focal point of weekend activities, with programmes that engage children in art and crafts.
Conservation Centre
The first of its kind in the region, the conservation centre has two purpose-built laboratories for the conservation of organic materials. Apart from keeping the museum's collection in good condition, the conservation centre provides its services to other organizations. It also undertakes collaborative work with local and international organizations, and conducts training for conservators. It has hosted interns from the Musee du Louvre in Paris, University of Melbourne, Art Gallery of New South Wales and local Malaysian universities.
Exhibitions, Lectures and Workshops
On average, the museum organizes two exhibitions a year. Some are displays of its own outstanding collections while others are collaborations with venerable institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum, Stibbert Museum and the National Museum of New Delhi. Exhibitions are often complemented by lectures, workshops and children's activities.
Publications
The museum makes a lasting contribution through its publishing division. In the 10 years of its existence, it has produced more than 20 books, mostly as an accompaniment to exhibitions.
