Library materials are placed in several areas:
1. General collection
These are general books that support the teaching and learning activities of the university, books on general knowledge and hobbies. They are placed on the Open Shelf and can be accessed freely by users. The loan period of this collection depends on the type of library membership.

2. Reference Collection
This consists of general reference materials such as encyclopedia, dictionaries, yearbooks, indexes and bibliographies. The Call Number is preceded with “REF” and shelved at a designated area on Level 2. Generally this collection is for in-house reference only. Faculty members may arrange for short loans of this collection for classroom use.
3. Red Spot
This collection comprises of items in heavy demand or recommended by academic staff for short-term loan. Also placed in this collection are copies of core textbook titles. The loan period of this collection is three hours. For overnight loan, transactions should be made after 4.30pm and be returned before 9.00am the next opening day. Only one item may be borrowed at a time. The Red Spot Collection is placed at the Reserve Collection area, Ground Floor.
4. Textbooks
This is a special collection of textbooks which are adopted or recommended at faculty level as core textbooks. As per Library Purchasing Policy, the number of copies to be purchased will be 1:10 at the maximum of five copies. One of the copies will be placed at the Red Spot Collection.
5. University Calendar/Prospectus
A collection of local and foreign university calendars and prospectuses are kept at the Reserve Collection Area for in-house reference only.
6. AIU Archives
These are publications by the AIU community, on AIU and Albukhary Foundation and its subsidiaries. They are placed at the Reserve Collection Area and for in-house reference only.
7. Journals
The major collections of journals are in online format. However the limited collections of printed journals are shelved alphabetically on Level 2 and they are for in-house usage only.
8. Electronic Resources
Computers are available on Level 3 to provide internet access. Patrons may access the electronic databases provided by the library from the library page of the AIU website. As the Library is equipped with Wi-fi facility, library users who have personal laptops can also access these databases. Electronic resources can be accessed both on-campus or remotely.
9. Special Collections Room/Archives
The subject contents and coverage of the Special Collections Room will be identified at a later stage. However the Archival activities will concentrate on preserving the history of the university, publications of AIU and by AIU community. All faculty, staff, students and alumni are encouraged to donate these items to the Archives in order to provide a complete picture of past and current events. This is a closed access collection and use of the room will be under strict supervision.
The AIU Library’s collection is cataloged electronically using the Library of Congress classification system for the Call Number (see below) and Library of Congress Subject Headings for the subject identifications. The only exceptions are printed periodicals and Audio-visual materials which are arranged alphabetically by title and AV materials which are assigned by consecutive numbers as they are received.
